Where Are the Weeds?

Your weed killer selection depends on where you’ll be using it because you don’t want to risk damaging healthy plants.

In the Flower Beds

When attacking weeds in the flower beds, you want products that can be applied precisely (e.g. bottles that shoot a narrow spray). Avoid misting as you risk it floating onto the good plants. If the garden is not severely overrun, you can also try to manually remove as many weeds as possible.

There is such a wide variety of weeds that can overtake flower beds, and the types of weeds vary from region to region.

If you have identified a specific weed, then look for products that target it specifically rather than trusting all-purpose weed killers. Some of them might damage the weed but not enough to keep it at bay for long. For general weed problems, make sure you apply the product to the weeds only and do so on a calm day (no wind or breeze).

In the Yard

You usually combat clover, dandelions, chickweed and other types of invasive grasses like Annual Bluegrass or Crabgrass. Look for products that target one or several of these if you want to eliminate them.

The same products used for lawns are also great for use on walkways, patios, and some flower beds. They must always be applied safely.

In the Vegetable Garden

Anytime that food is involved, you need to be careful about what you are applying to the weeds. Here is where manual weed removal will always be the best first option.

When looking for a killing product, we suggest you start with natural weed killers such as boiling water. Dump boiling water can immediately kill many weeds. Another natural killer is a mixture of vinegar and dish soap that you can spray directly onto the weeds.

Weed prevention is the best way to help keep your vegetable garden happy. If you’re reading this in time, invest in some weed barrier fabric and apply it early on in the planting season.

If the patch of earth that you want to use for your vegetable garden is currently covered in weeds, you could go the chemical route and use a product that contains glyphosate. This herbicide is non-selective, meaning that it isn’t a weed-specific herbicide. Rather it will kill most living grasses and broad-leafed plants. You should do this well in advance (before planting vegetables). Otherwise, you risk killing seeds, seedlings, and plants by planting too soon. Just follow the instructions on the bottle and research how to use it before you go spraying and tilling.

Weed and Feed

When it comes to ridding your lawn of weeds, you might be better off purchasing a weed and feed that is specially formulated with two chemical agents. One is there to help kill weeds such as dandelions and clover while the other will feed your lawn.

These work great for lawns that have a bad case of weeds and are even safe in flower beds. If you’re just targeting a few weeds now and then, you can get by with a specialty spray to attack them specifically.

Top 5 Best Weed Killer Reviews

1. Round Up Pro Concentrate Systemic Herbicide

Roundup Pro’s highly concentrated glyphosate mixture is the type of product that you would use to eliminate large patches of weeds. As we mentioned earlier, the glyphosate targets all grasses and broadleaf plants, so you shouldn’t use this on your lawn, or anywhere that you have healthy plants around that you would like to keep.

Round Up Pro Concentrate 50.2% Glyphosate 2.5 Gallon Jug Systemic Herbicide
  • Round Up Pro is used in many situations from agricultural farming to industrial vegetation management; It can also be used around residential homes and commercial businesses to control unwanted weeds; Roundup Pro is also used by many highway right of way (ROW) management companies, cities, counties, and municipal governments
  • Easy to use
  • Non-Selective Herbicide
  • Rainfast in just one hour

*Price from:  2024-04-03 at 00:40 EST

It’s great in areas that have been overtaken by weeds, such as ditches and fields, and if you mix it up and use it in the sprayer, it works great at killing weed between stones, bricks and other crevices.

We realize that it is a bit pricey and not the most natural solution out there. But if you have solid weed patches that you would like to kill, then this is the best weed killer you can get your hands on.

Due to the nature of the chemical, this product cannot be purchased by those residing in Hawaii, Alaska or California. ✔ Let's get it NOW!

No products found.

This isn’t your regular vinegar that you use in the kitchen or your DIY cleaner spray. It is a strong, 20% solution of distilled white vinegar that you can use to attack weeds safely in your vegetable garden. You can actually use it for cooking and around the home. We buy this for gardening since it is more expensive than regular vinegar.

No products found.

One of the main reasons that gardeners use it is that it is environmentally friendly and natural, which means that applying it around the vegetables is in no way toxic or hazardous.

Before using vinegar on the weeds, you need to understand that it can lower the pH of the soil in the areas where you apply it. If you have alkaline soil, then adding a bit of vinegar is useful. Otherwise, it’s not helpful if you have acidic soil.

You should do some soil testing before using this and please, please make sure you wear safety gear when using this. It is an acid, and it can burn you at this high concentration.

Look for some great DIY weed killer recipes online and give it a go! No products found.

3. Compare-N-Save Grass and Weed Killer

Compare-N-Save is another glyphosate concentrated mixture that is a little more diluted than the top product on our list.

Compare-N-Save 75324 Herbicide, 1-gallon, white
  • Rainproof in 2 hours
  • Visible results in as little as 2 to 4 days
  • Contains 41-percent glyphosate
  • Covers over 25,000 square feet
  • Makes up to 85 gal. of ready-to-use spray. Note: Packaging may vary

*Price from:  2024-04-03 at 00:40 EST

An entire bottle of this can cover up to 25,000 square feet, and each bottle makes up to 85 gallons of solution. The bottle is much more affordable than the Roundup Pro Concentrate. It is most effective when used on weeds that have popped up along walkways, fence lines, and patios. It will work to kill foliage and the root systems of weeds.

You can use this in the garden (flower beds), but you need to pay close attention to when and where you apply it so that you don’t risk spraying healthy plants.

It’s one of the most popular products on our list and one that we highly recommend! ✔ Yes! I want it!

4. Southern Ag 2,4-D Amine Weed Killer

Southern Ag Amine 2,4-D WEED KILLER, 32oz - Quart
  • Low, economical use rate of 1 to 4 pints per acre
  • Controls many broadleaf weeds & woody plants
  • Use in turf, pastures, rangeland, ditch banks, fences…

*Price from:  2024-04-02 at 20:35 EST

Our final suggestion is a broadleaf weed killer. It will no indiscriminately kill all your plants. This one is selective and only kills certain broadleaf weeds.

Many use this on large, grassy areas such as cemeteries, golf courses, parks, and in ditches to give you an idea. The active ingredient is dimethylamine salt. This is an organic compound that won’t harm certain types of grasses, cereals, or turf.

Before you use this, it is important that you understand why species of grass or other plants will also be coated with it. If you don’t know and spray it on the wrong types, you’ll end up killing everything.

When used properly, it is a very effective weed killer. ✔ Let's get it NOW!

What is every gardener’s solution to a hungry lawn and garden that is being overrun by weeds? Yes, find and use the Best Weed and feed!

This handy mixture of ingredients will allow you to safely attack pesky weeds growing in your lawn while providing the lawn, itself, with a healthy dose of fertilizer to help it thrive.

We’ll answer all of the questions for you in our guide below. Also, check out the always up to date best sellers!

Top Selling Weed and Feeds

*Price from:  2024-04-03 at 00:40 EST

Important Buying Info

There are many small details to take into consideration before you purchase to ensure that you are truly getting the best weed and feed for your lawn and garden.

Be sure to take these things into consideration before you purchase:

  • Type of Weed(s). Remember that not all lawns suffer from the same weed problem. If you have no dandelions but patches of clover, then you should look for a product that specifically targets clover.

You’ll find other mixtures that target crabgrass, chickweed, ragweed, and plantain just to name a few.

  • Your Grass Type. Make sure that you know your grass type before you choose a fertilizer because some grasses are actually considered weeds in certain areas. The last thing you want to do is apply a weed killer that ends up killing your grass!

Another reason to verify your grass type is to make sure that you’re providing it with the proper fertilizer

  • Application Method. These come in two forms: granules or liquid.

Liquids are easy because you can simply hook them up to the hose and then spray them on the lawn. This is quick and you can cover a lot of lawn easily. It is a bit harder though to ensure you are getting the correct application rate. I find with practice this is not a problem. When I first started using liquid weed killers and fertilizers I generally used too little not too much. So, just try it out delivering at a casual rate, then see how much product you have applied. You can then adjust your application.

If you have something to help you apply the granules, known as a spreader, then granules are fine. If you don’t have a spreader, we suggest that you get one because you don’t want to risk burning your grass by applying too much product into a concentrated area.

And for the Flower Beds?

Most of you are probably in search of a weed and feed to use on your lawn, but remember that there are good “weed and feed” products if you’re looking for a 2-in-1 solution to fertilize the flower beds while attacking the most common weeds that grow there.

Top 3 Best Weed and Feed Reviews

This is a 32-ounce bottle and can treat up to 7,500 square feet of lawn. I like that on my small lawn, I can do three treatments. The unused product easily stores until I need to apply it again. For best results, I have re-applied 2-weeks after my first application.

This Spectracide product is clearly one of the best weed and feeds that you will find today.

Here is a list of the weeds it is said to control: dandelion, chickweed, knotweed, plantain, clover, mallow, purslane and many others as listed. ✔ Let's get it NOW!

2. Scotts Turf Builder Weed & Feed 3

  • One 14.29 lb. bag of Scotts Turf Builder Weed & Feed3 covers 5,000 sq. ft.

*Price from:  2024-04-03 at 00:40 EST

It is best to apply this product in the spring  since it will help promote healthy growth of grass throughout the spring, summer and fall, as well as keeping the dandelion and clover at bay during the same time period. Fall is OK, too, if you live in a warmer climate where you can expect growth throughout the fall and winter. Be sure to keep people and pets off lawn for at least 24 hours after applying this product.

It comes in granule form and can go on any type of grass with a N-P-K ratio of 28-0-4. This is a great product for common weeds and feeding. If you have more difficult weeds to deal with like crabgrass, you will need an additional product.

This seems to work best with smaller lawns. ✔ I'm sold!

This all-natural weed preventer/lawn feeder is made from corn gluten meal and has a guaranteed fertilizer analysis of 9-0-0.

The one important thing to keep in mind with this specific product is that it does not kill existing weeds; it is designed to prevent new weeds from growing.

Corn gluten meal is a by-product of milled corn. Being a natural protein, this corn meal gluten also happens to work well as a plant food and as a way to suppress weeds!

If you’re proactive about your lawn care and looking for a product that will prevent the weeds (naturally), then this is the best weed and feed for your lawn. If you want something to kill existing weeds, then have a look at some of the other great options on our list! ✔ Yes! I want it!

It is not easy to find a good product that will rid your flowerbed of weeds without harming the actual ornamental plants and flowers. We know that you want the best weed killer for flower beds and will help you identify them.

There are many products out there that don’t work. There are still plenty that do work and we would like to present them to you in our guide below!

Whether you’re in need of a ready-to-use weed killer that is safe to use around your flowers or if you’re feeling a bit more ambitious and want to try making your own, we have the top suggestions for you right here.

Do You Need to Kill or Prevent?

Many of you set out in search of the best weed killer for flower beds (which you will find here), but did you also take future weeds into consideration?

You’ll find two kinds of products here. Those that kill existing weeds and those that prevent weeds from growing in the first place. And, chances are you could need both!

We are a professional reader-supported review site. You get our best product recommendations and we can receive small commissions from our affiliates at no cost to you. Win-Win!!

Types of Weed Killers

Here are the main choices you have for flowerbed weed killers:

  • Granules. These are great for large flowerbeds. Be sure that you work them into the soil and water them thoroughly after applying.
  • Concentrated Liquids. Remember that concentrated liquids usually require that you add water. This means you’ll probably need to have an empty bottle or container on hand so you can mix everything in it and then use the bottle to spray the weeds.
  • Ready-To-Use. If you are in need of something quick and easy, then we suggest that you get a ready-to-use spray that is already mixed and safe to use as-is.

Try Alternative Methods!

In our opinion, the best weed killer for flower beds is a natural one. If you enjoy whipping up batches of household cleaners or beauty creams, why not try a safe and effective weed killer while you’re at it?

  • Boiling Water. Looking for a quick and easy way to kill a few stray weeds in hard-to-reach areas of the flowerbed? We suggest one of our favorite alternative methods: boiling water. Isn’t that a great idea!

Boiling water alone is enough to scald and kill some non-invasive weeds. But you don’t want to risk dumping any on your delicate flowers and plants. So, we suggest you get a hot-water friendly watering can with precision pour spout.

This one from Esschert Design  is made of stainless steel and has a precision spout that will allow you to target stubborn weeds.

You can use this for any indoor plants you have, too, so it won’t be a waste of money!

  • Vinegar. Vinegar is another common weed killer for gardeners and we’ll be taking a closer look at it in our review section below!

Often times, DIY recipes call for both vinegar and liquid dish soap. Here is a nice and safe soap to use if you want to try that: No products found.. It is also biodegradable and “cruelty-free.”

Lemon is a natural insect repellent, so their lemon verbena scent will help your flowerbeds out in multiple ways!

Top 3 Best Weed Killer for Flowerbeds Reviews

1. Compare-N-Save Concentrate Grass and Weed Killer

Seeing that this is a common herbicide used to keep the weeds down in crops. It is also safe for you to use around the flowerbeds.

This is a 41% solution of glyphosate that, when applied to the weeds, will be absorbed by their leaves and kill them to the root.

Compare-N-Save 75324 Herbicide, 1-gallon, white
  • Rainproof in 2 hours
  • Visible results in as little as 2 to 4 days
  • Contains 41-percent glyphosate
  • Covers over 25,000 square feet
  • Makes up to 85 gal. of ready-to-use spray. Note: Packaging may vary

*Price from:  2024-04-03 at 00:40 EST

It’s a great general weed killer to have in your garden shed. You can use it on pathways, around the vegetable garden, and in the flowerbeds. Keep in mind that while it is great at killing weeds, you’ll have to stay on top of things in order to prevent them from coming back. This isn’t a one-spray-kills-forever solution. ✔ Let's get it NOW!

You’ll need a sprayer to mix and then apply this weed killer, so if you don’t already have one, we suggest this No products found..

2. Roundup Weed and Grass Killer Super Concentrate

Roundup is one of the most well known weed killers there is. Because of its popularity, it has been in the news a lot lately. Rather than try to describe the discussion here, I’ll just link to a great WikiPedia article on it: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roundup_(herbicide)

You’ll notice that this bottle, which is only a 1/2-gallon, is quite expensive, but as a concentrate, you’ll be diluting it with water so it will last quite a while.

Roundup Super Concentrate Weed & Grass Killer - Includes Easy Measure Cap, 0.5 gal.
  • Roundup Super Concentrate Weed & Grass Killer is a great value for large areas
  • Rainproof in 30 minutes
  • Weeds usually yellow and wilt as fast as 2-4 days
  • For use around flowers, shrubs, and trees; on patios, walkways, driveways, gravel areas, and mulch beds; along fences and foundations; in large areas for lawn replacements or garden plot preparation
  • Use easy measure cap and apply with a Roundup brand tank sprayer

*Price from:  2024-04-03 at 01:23 EST

This also contains glyphosate like the previous product but in a higher percentage (50.2% versus the 41% from Compare-N-Save).

Roundup has quite a few products to choose from, but this one can be used around flowers, mulch beds, and many of the common nooks and crannies where those stubborn weeds grow. ✔ I'm sold!

No products found.

A 20% solution of white vinegar should be strong enough to kill the weeds. We personally recommend this one from Factory Direct Vinegar. And at this strength, you will find it effective in many other cleaning situations. This is definitely my “go-to” for bathroom cleaning where limescale can build up, but I digress.

No products found.

There are weed killer recipes that gardeners swear by that contain vinegar, but the one thing you need to take into consideration when you use it is that it can lower the pH of your soil!

If your soil is alkaline, this might actually be a good thing, but if your soil is already acidic, it might have a negative effect on the surrounding plants.

You can search for plenty of recipes online, but when it comes to choosing the vinegar, you’re going to need the stronger stuff.

Be very careful when you handle it because it can burn you (it is an acid). Always wear safety gloves and goggles when using this strong product! No products found.

We would recommend you get some glass bottles  to mix the solution up in. This could be for straight application, diluted application, or for a DIY cleaning solution.

Buying Information

Getting rid of poison ivy is not an easy task, but it can be done with the right weed killer and some basic knowledge.

Non-Chemical Poison Ivy Control

While it is possible to rid your yard of poison ivy without the use of chemical herbicide, organic methods take copious amounts of time and effort. The most difficult part of eliminating poison ivy is that the whole plant must be destroyed. Without the use of toxic chemicals, you will have to use a lot of elbow grease to pull the plant out of the ground, roots and all. However, even with the most careful weeding, it is still possible to miss some underground parts of the plant. If even the tiniest bit remains, the plant will sprout new growth and need to be pulled again.

Chemical Poison Ivy Control

Chemical herbicides work much faster and with less personal effort. The drawback is that many of these chemicals kill desirable plants as well as poison ivy. Some of them are also toxic to humans, so careful handling is necessary. You will want to wear long sleeves as well as protective gloves and be certain to launder clothing separately from the regular family wash.

Herbicides that contain glyphosate, triclopyr, or a three-way herbicide that contains 2,4-D amine, dicamba, and mecoprop work best on eliminating poison ivy and inhibiting regrowth. The optimal time for application of these pesticides is in late spring and early summer as the poison ivy plants are in their active growth phase.

Be prepared to repeat the application if necessary. Even the most powerful herbicide won’t be able to reach all the roots. Depending on weather and outside temperature, it may take several days or even weeks to see if your removal efforts have been successful. If you see any new growth, respray. Repeated application on new growth will eventually cause this stubborn plant to die back completely.

You’ve noticed unattractive weedy-looking grass taking over your yard lately. The bad news is that you probably have crabgrass. This is a fast-growing invasive weed that will spread like wildfire through your yard if you don’t do something about it. The good news is that there are several options for nipping this problem in the bud.

By the time you get done reading this article, you’ll be able to find the best crabgrass killer to get your yard back under control. You’ll see the top crabgrass killers on our table. Then you can scroll down for buying information that will help you make your choice. You’ll also see reviews of the top three products available.

Do You Want to Kill Existing Crabgrass or Stop It Before It Starts?

Some formulas of herbicides will serve as all-in-one products – they’ll prevent the emergence of new seedlings and kill the crabgrass that is already there.

If you have a problem with crabgrass every year, you can look for the best crabgrass preventer and the best crabgrass killer all rolled into one. If you just have a random patch here or there, you can opt for only the post-emergent crabgrass killer.

For most home owners, the biggest mistake is not getting a pre-emergent crabgrass killer down soon enough in the Spring. Crabgrass is a pretty strong weed and it is much better to keep it from ever starting. Crabgrass grows very quickly especially if given direct sunlight. As the plant gets bigger, it gets much harder to kill and could take several applications.

Do You Want to Protect the Rest of Your Yard?

Is your yard completely overrun by crabgrass? Does it seem like a pipe dream that you can put down enough product to take care of the serious overgrowth you’re facing?

If so, you might want to use a non-selective crabgrass killer. That simply means the herbicide will kill your crabgrass, but it might also kill everything in its path. You may have to be prepared to seed a new lawn if you go this route. With this much crabgrass in your yard, you need to get aggressive with treatment.

If you just have a few problem areas and the rest of your lawn is still in good shape, you can opt for a selective herbicide that only knocks out crabgrass, leaving the rest of your plants healthy.

How Do I Want to Apply the Crabgrass Killer?

You have a couple of options when it comes to how you’ll apply the crabgrass killer. Read on and see which type you choose depends upon your comfort level.

You can purchase a ready-to-use crabgrass killer that will come in a spray bottle. All you have to do is spray it on your trouble areas. It doesn’t get much easier than that.

For bigger areas, you may want to consider getting the kind of herbicide that will attach to your garden hose for the application. For large areas and even complete lawns, this is the recommended route. And will save you time and money as opposed to trying to spot treat the weed.

Which way you choose really depends upon your comfort level with handling herbicides.

Selection of Crabgrass Killers

Compare-N-Save Concentrate Grass and Weed Killer

When it’s mixed properly with water, this container of grass and weed killer can make 85 gallons of spray that’s ready to go. That much mixture can cover more than 25,000 square feet of lawn.

You won’t have to wait all summer to see results from this product. You’ll start to see crabgrass dying off in 2 to 4 days after you apply it.

If you’re trying to fit in spraying this weed killer before the rain hits, you’ll want to know that it dries and becomes rainproof in 2 hours.

Gardeners who want to use this crabgrass killer around their fruit and vegetable gardens need to closely follow the directions on the label.

Since this killer is a post-emergent spray, it won’t stop future growth, it will just kill your existing crabgrass.

Be aware that this herbicide will kill ALL your plants – not just your crabgrass. So you’ll want to spray it with caution.

BASF Drive XLR8 Herbicide

When you’re looking for the best crabgrass killer on the market, you should consider Drive XLR8. It’s a liquid formulation, which is water-based, and it helps you get your crabgrass problem under control in a jiffy. Because this is a very specific crabgrass formulation, it is going to cost more, but it is the most effective product we have found for selectively killing crabgrass. The turf remains unhindered.

One single container of Drive XLR8 will treat a full acre. It is taken up by the plant quickly, which means those plants will be eliminated soon after you apply this solution.

It will dry in less than 1 hour. You won’t have to be overly concerned about checking the weather forecast. A quick look at the sky to see any rain clouds will be enough to know it’s safe to apply.

This product can kill crabgrass in one application, which means you won’t have to spend your whole summer battling against your crabgrass – you can take care of it in one day.

Syngenta Tenacity Turf Herbicide

Crabgrass won’t be the only weed that suffers when you use Tenacity Turf herbicide. It will kill or control more than 40 species, which means you’ll get rid of every pesky weed or grass in your lawn. This is an expensive but highly useful product with the active ingredient of Mesotrione (at 40% concentration).

While many sprays only kill existing crabgrass, this one can be used both as a pre-emergence and post-emergence spray. You can use it on your existing lawn. You can also use it on turf that has just been seeded without fear of killing those delicate seedlings.

You’ll know it’s working when the leaves begin to lose their color, turning light green before becoming white. After that, the plant dies. Although the weeds won’t die the next day as they do with quick-acting herbicides, it will take care of them within a week.

This herbicide is very safe. It earned a reduced-risk designation by the Environmental Protection Agency because of its good ecotoxicity performance. We are glad to have it for your consideration.

When you were little, the sight of dandelions probably filled you with joy. But now that you’re an adult seeing these nuisances sprouting up all over your yard likely has you seething with rage. Time to find the best dandelion killers to take care of these beautiful beasts.

If these yellow weeds have you seeing red, let us help you take care of your problem. Compare the top-selling dandelion killers in our table. Then scroll down for useful buying information as well as reviews of our three favorite dandelion killers.

Do You Want to Just Kill Dandelions or Other Plants Too?

When choosing the best dandelion killer for your yard, you need to have a firm grasp of what your needs are. Do you want to kill the dandelions only or do you have other plants you would like to eliminate as well?

  • Selective Herbicide. If you just have a problem with dandelions and you want your other plants to remain healthy, you need to look for a selective herbicide. A selective herbicide is a substance that will get rid of weeds like dandelions without harming the other plants in your yard that are actually wanted.
  • Non-Selective Herbicide. If you have dandelions popping up through the cracks in your sidewalk or patches in your driveway where you don’t want any plants at all, you should opt for a non-selective herbicide. These will kill almost every plant it comes in contact with, including dandelions.

You Might Need Both Nonselective and Selective Herbicides

Most yards have more than one type of surface. You have your lawn, but you’ll also have driveways, patios, and flower beds.

  • If you’re having problems with dandelions in your yard, but also on the cracks in your driveway, you should bite the bullet and buy both types of herbicide. A selective and a nonselective. They both address the specific needs of your lawn.
  • You might not welcome the expense of purchasing two types, but your situation demands it. If you’ve spent so much money buying a house and maintaining it, you don’t want to get cheap. The solution is pretty quick and simple and results in a better appearance.
  • Getting rid of the grass, dandelions, and other weeds that are poking through cracks in sidewalks and driveways will help your yard have a tidier, well-maintained look.

What Kind of Herbicide Will Take Care of Dandelions?

Dandelions are classified as a broadleaf weed. That means you need an herbicide specially formulated to kill off broadleaf weeds. The good news is that modern herbicides generally do quick work of broadleaf weeds if properly applied.

You can’t just mow dandelions and think that will take care of your problem. They must be killed at the root, not the stem.
