Since you’re in need of a reel to keep the hose safely off the ground and out of the way when you’re not using it, our guide has all of the info you’ll need in order to choose a great one.

The garden shed usually fills with new goodies as each year passes. In the fall, you might add some decent rakes to help you stay ahead of the leaves and pine needles that conglomerate around the yard. In the spring, a durable pair of pruning shears joins the box and so does a nice new lawnmower.

So, now you need to do something about that garden hose that keeps tripping you up as you go about your yard work!

We highlight the best hose reel choices below and provide you with plenty of useful shopping tips that make choosing one a breeze.

How to Choose a Quality Hose Reel

Here are a few things you’ll need to take into consideration before you choose a reel.

  • Material. There are plenty of different options when it comes to reel materials, so as the king (or queen) of your garden, you’re going to have to decide which of these things is more important to you: durability or aesthetics?

Unfortunately, the best hose reel is usually a bit of an eyesore out in your garden, but it is stronger than an ox and will probably last much longer than the more attractive ones. But, if you are ready to spend more to get something that is strong and attractive, that is definitely possible as well.

We’ve included a mix for you in our list, but as a rule of thumb, this is a way to help you narrow down the choices.

  • Aluminum. Aluminum is both strong and lightweight, and if the manufacturer wants to ensure a happy client, they have also ensured that it is rustproof. These are the most durable choice and what we recommend.
  • Plastic. Plastic is the cheapest (and most unattractive!) choice out there. We do appreciate that it is easy to clean and it definitely gets the job done.
  • Wrought Iron. Wrought iron is quite heavy but it definitely adds a nice touch do your gardening décor.

Hose Reel Styles

When it comes to the style of the hose reel, you basically have four options: wall mount, cabinet, wheeled, sit-on-the-ground reels. This last category (sit-on-the-ground), are like cabinets without walls and wheeled reels without the wheels. They very problematic and should be avoided. Garden hoses are heavy and thus the reel you want to put them in needs to be sturdy or you will be constantly fighting against it.

Below I have reviewed 3 nice garden hose reels in each of the other categories.

  • Wall Mount. One of the most important things to check before you purchase a wall mount reel is the mounting mechanism. What surfaces it can be mounted to? Will it be going on a brick wall? Siding? Wood? Always make sure that the mounting hardware included will accommodate the surface you need to attach it to, otherwise, you’ll need to head down to the nearest home improvement store and purchase separate parts.
  • Cabinet. Cabinets keep the hose out of sight and out of mind. These can be plastic or wrought iron and really span a spectrum of very basic to very ornate. If you select a nice looking cabinet, it can really clean up the look of your garden hose storage.
  • Wheeled. Wheeled hose reels are very convenient, but make sure that the unit is solid and won’t tip over easily. The wheels should be durable and that the body is made out of rustproof material. Generally, you’d be selecting a wheeled unit if you plan to move your hose from one point to another. This may even be to wheel it to your storage shed when not in use.

Hoses are an essential tool to any garden, but unfortunately, the hose isn’t the type of item that lasts for 10 years or more. If yours has, then you should consider yourself lucky and perhaps you already found the best garden hose.

There are quite a few different manufacturers all claiming to sell you the “best garden hose ever,” but many of them fall short because their product just doesn’t last!

Luckily, for you, we have weeded out (no pun intended) all of the bad hoses and present the top 10 products to you here in our guide.

Here, you can easily compare and contrast the top hoses in order to find the right one for your needs and budget; plus, we’ll provide you with plenty of useful shopping tips that will make the process as easy as pie!

Things to Consider

Before you purchase a hose, here are a few important things to take into consideration in order to narrow down the choices to the right one.

  • Length. This is kind of a no brainer, but we’re mentioning it because it will encourage you to get out in the garden and measure everything!

Make sure that the hose you choose will reach everywhere in your garden that needs watering. If it is too short, remember that you can purchase separate (and shorter) extension hoses to help you reach an area without too much excess hose.

  • Weight. Some of those hoses are pretty heavy-duty, and as such, they are also quite heavy.

If you’re looking for something that is easier to drag around the yard, consider getting an expanding garden hose.

  • Outdoor Temperatures. This suggestion is mainly for those of you who live in climates where the temperatures get close to freezing.

The expanding hoses are getting very popular these days. At first, they were very flimsy and more of a gimmick. Now, so many people are turning to them because of the easy of use and storage, I have reviewed and added some to my list for this year.

Different hoses can withstand different temperature lows, so if you think that your fall, winter, and early spring temperatures will dip down quite low, be sure to check the temperature rating of the hose.

Hose Types

In order to choose the best garden hose, compare and contrast the different types to determine which will suit your needs.

  • Polymer, PVC or Rubber. These are the most common types of hoses out there and the majority of the hoses on our list are made from them.

Some may be a combination of materials. The Stanley FatMax Garden Hose, for example, is made from a combination of polyurethane and PVC. Others hoses are made from hybrid polymers.

Rubber hoses are usually the heaviest and not as common in the garden because of this and here higher price. Many use them in commercial or industrial garden areas or as farming hoses.

  • Expandable. Stretchy hoses are ideal if you want a lightweight hose that takes up little space when not in use.

These hoses are usually made of nylon on the outside with a solid material in the core. Number 4, for example, has a latex core and a 5000D polyester shell on the outside.

  • Soaker Hoses. We figured that those of you who are looking for the best garden hose probably want a solid one. We did throw in one soaker hose in our table since they can be equally as useful to gardeners.

These allow you to water certain areas of the garden with a slower water flow rate and release rate. They’re also great for watering in full sun since the water falls directly on the ground and seeps into the soil rather than hitting the leaves. This will help you prevent burnt leaves.

Control the Fittings

It’s important to scrutinize the hose connectors (or fittings) since this is where leaks can develop.

Most hoses have a ¾-inch fitting (the actual hose itself is 5/8-inch) and come in a variety of materials such as aluminum, brass and copper.

These are the most common and are all durable, but you should always make sure to double-check that the fit is secure when you tighten the male end to the female end.

Watering the lawn sure is a lot easier if you have a sprinkler to do all of the work for you. With all of the choices out there, how do you know which one is worth the purchase? We asked ourselves the same question and ended up creating this useful list of the best oscillating sprinkler options to help answer it!

Here we’ll discuss the main features that you need to pay attention to while shopping for this specific type of sprinkler and provide you with detailed reviews of our three favorite products.

First, check out the top selling sprinklers in our table.

We are a professional reader-supported review site. You get our best product recommendations and we can receive small commissions from our affiliates at no cost to you. Win-Win!!

What to Look at as You Shop

There are plenty of great sprinkler head options if you have a dedicated sprinkler system. But most people use a portable sprinkler with an oscillation head. Here are the most important things you need to keep in mind as you shop.

  • Coverage Area. You’ll notice in our table above that we’ve included the area (in square feet) that the sprinkler covers.

This is when the sprinkler is turned on full blast and you’ve adjusted it to all of the widest settings. Even though all products list a coverage area, this will be limited by your water pressure. If you have lower than average water pressure, you will not be able to achieve the same results.

Keep in mind that oscillating sprinklers are much more versatile than most sprinkler heads because you have control over the area that they cover. When you have less water flowing (you turn the hose on low) you can target smaller areas of your lawn and garden and set the oscillation to a specific angle.

  • Price Versus Quality. This is actually one of those products where it is valid to say, “You get what you pay for!”

While they do tend to be a bit more delicate overall (there are small gears inside like a watch and plastic certainly isn’t as durable as metal), the best oscillating sprinkler usually has a higher price tag.

Cheaper ones may work OK, but they’re definitely not going to last as long!

Don’t Forget to Clean the Nozzles!

If you want your sprinkler to perform at its best throughout the gardening season, then be sure to clean out the nozzles on a regular basis.

We all know what a pain hard water can be, and if you don’t clean out the nozzles, they can get clogged and won’t release any water (just like the showerhead).

We’ve used anything from pins to toothpicks, but just make sure to be gentle so you don’t damage the nozzle holes.

Top 3 Best Oscillating Sprinkler Reviews

1. Gardena ZoomMaxx on Metal Step Spike

We actually wanted to include this twice on our list. The reason is a good one: each model has a different base that will allow you to use it in different ways in your lawn and garden, but I think you can find both models on Amazon.

We liked this one because it has the metal spike that allows you to fix it into the ground; the same way you would with a pulsating sprinkler. Since most oscillating sprinklers rest on the grass they aren’t always as sturdy (they can tip slightly and change the coverage area), but with this one, you have more control on slanted landscapes.

With this head, you have precise control over the spray width and range and it comes with a fine mesh filter on the inside to keep sand and dirt particles from clogging the nozzles.

Since this covers a smaller area (maximum 1506 square meters), this wouldn’t be the right choice for larger lawns and gardens, but the other Gardena ZoomMaxx model we featured does have a wider range if you are interested!

2. Aqua Joe Indestructible Oscillating Sprinkler

If you’re sick of the flimsy plastic sprinkler heads that snap in two just looking at them (OK, that’s a bit of an exaggeration), then you are definitely ready for this one from Melnor.

Aqua Joe SJI-OMS16 Indestructible Metal Base Oscillating Sprinkler with Adjustable Spray, 3600-Square Foot Coverage
  • [CUSTOMIZABLE]: Completely customizable coverage patterns.Sprinkler Base Type : Stand
  • [RANGE]: Superior range control covers up to 3600 sq ft
  • [DURABLE]: Leak-resistant connection so you can water with peace of mind
  • [CLOG-RESISTANT]: Equipped with 16 clog-resistant nozzles
  • [COMPATIBILITY]: Fits a standard garden hose connection

*Price from:  2024-03-18 at 10:15 EST

To us, this is probably the best oscillating sprinkler on the list because we know that it will actually last. The base is made of aluminum; making it both lightweight and sturdy, and adjusting the flow range is very simple.

Not only can you adjust the width and length, but this sprinkler also comes with clog-resistant nozzles and a cleanout tool just in case.

If you’re sick of the cheap models letting you down, you’ll be relieved when you start using this to water your lawn. ✔ I'm sold, let's get it!

3. Melnor XT Turbo with Flow Control

Same great Melnor quality but slightly less expensive than the previous model, the XT Turbo is our third favorite oscillating sprinkler on the list.

Melnor 65078-AMZ XT Turbo Oscillating Sprinkler with 3-Way Adjustment and QuickConnect Product Adapter Set, Amazon Bundle
  • 20 Precision nozzles provide maximum coverage of large lawns or gardens up to 4, 500 Sq. Ft.
  • Twin touch controls adjust the width and range of the watering pattern to cover the whole yard or a narrow flower bed.
  • Infinity turbo drive provides a smooth operation for even watering and extended life.
  • Quickly connect and disconnect the sprinkler with an included Quick Connect Product Adapter (Requires Quick Connect Product End Connector sold separately)
  • Backed by the Melnor Limited Lifetime . We stand behind our products.

*Price from:  2024-03-08 at 07:37 EST

The lower price is probably due to the fact that the base is made of plastic, but even so, this was still a higher quality plastic than some of the other unites we looked at.

Melnor used the same system on this model as they did the previous model, so in terms of range and adjustability, you basically have the same thing.

If you wanted to spend less, then you can opt for this plastic one. If you prefer something more durable, then go with the previous one with the aluminum base! ✔ Yes! I want it!

When there’s not enough rain, your garden can get thirsty. The best soaker hose will help you keep your plants and other foliage well-watered. Soaker hoses release water slowly and evenly to make sure that everything gets all the water that it needs.

There are plenty of hoses on the market today that help you with gardening. They tend to come with different capabilities. This means choosing one is not always as straightforward as you might expect.

With so many hoses available, we have created this handy guide to help you choose the best soaker hose for your needs.

We are a professional reader-supported review site. You get our best product recommendations and we can receive small commissions from our affiliates at no cost to you. Win-Win!!

How to Choose the Right Soaker Hose

A common issue is that some soaker hoses don’t disperse the water evenly along the length of the hose. This leads to some patches that are overly wet, and others that are dry. It is also important to be sure that the hose can be bent without creating kinks that limit the flow of water through the hose. Here are some key features you should look for:

  • Even Water Distribution. The best soaker hoses on the market are designed specifically with even dispersion of water in mind. You want the whole garden evenly watered. This is perhaps the most important aspect to look for in a soaker hose.
  • Anti-kink Technology. Some of the best hoses on the market are made from materials that help to prevent kinks and tangling from occurring. These are among the most popular on the market.
  • Leak-Resistant Attachments. When using hoses it is important to maintain a reasonable amount of water pressure if the hose is to be effective. This can mean ensuring that the hose is attached securely to the faucet. The best hoses come with attachments that fit securely to the faucet and prevent any leaks from occurring.
  • Length. The length of hose that you need is also an important consideration. Make sure that the hose you select meets the minimum length you require. It is possible to daisy-chain hoses together in order to provide additional length if needed.

Budget and Warranty

Budget is nearly always a deciding factor when making purchases but many soaker hoses will meet your minimum requirements at an affordable price. A good warranty can also be very useful should something go wrong.

I will say though that I have thrown away many inexpensive hoses. The less expensive ones are susceptible to damage. So, if pulling around a bush or rock then can get an extra big hole in them. Once this happens, too much water will exit at this damaged place and you will not get even watering along the whole length of the soaker. So don’t skimp or your soaker may only last you one season.

Top 3 Best Soaker Hose Reviews

1. Water Right Soaker Hose

If you want a professional soaker hose that won’t give out on you in just one season, consider investing a bit more in one like this from Water Tight.

The flat design of this hose helps to make it low profile when water is not running through it. This makes it fit into the garden landscape better and also easy to roll up and store away. Owners note that the distribution of water released is fairly consistent even at low pressure. Some leaks might occur if the water pressure is turned up too much.

With a 2 year warranty, you can be confident that this hose will last you well for a couple of years at least. If you are looking for a reliable soaker hose that is easily stored away then the Melnor flat soaker hose could be just what you have been looking for. ✔ I'm sold, let's get it!

3. Gilmour Flat Weeper

Another hose that helps to release water evenly throughout its length is the Gilmour. It is a flat weeper/speaker hose is another popular choice on the market. Its clog-free fabric covering helps to prevent the hose from the bombardment of UV light from the sun while also helping to prevent clogging for even distribution of water.

Gilmour 870501-1001 50 feet Garden Hose Flat Soaker Black
  • Snake through rows of new seedlings or under mature plantings for efficient, deep watering season after season
  • Create an easy DIY watering system by burying the hose under mulch. Hook it up to a timer and enjoy healthy, vibrant plants without all the watering work
  • Made of 100% environmentally-friendly recycled vinyl
  • Clog-resistant fabric cover for consistent soaking
  • 7-year warranty

*Price from:  2024-04-03 at 01:24 EST

Some owners have complained that this hose is will burst under too much pressure. We are unsure if they had defective products. A suggested solution is to put a pressure reducer at the inlet. This could be a penny with a small hole in it, or you can buy a specific piece. This will help to regulate the flow and prevent bursting.

This hose comes with a 7 years warranty. This makes the purchase a good value for the money, and one of the best soaker hose products available. For a hose that distributes water evenly and offers protection against the elements, the Gilmour flat weeper/soaker hose could be all that you need. ✔ Yes! I want it!

When installing an irrigation system, you’ll want to be sure you select the best sprinkler heads for the job. The layout of your system will show each watering zone. Knowing the zones will help you to determine the type of sprinkler heads you need.

Sprinkler heads come in various sizes, shapes, and spray patterns, and selecting the right ones for your system can be daunting. You needn’t worry. This guide will lead you down the right path to choosing sprinkler heads that will fit your budget and fulfill your watering needs.

Buying Information

Sprinkler heads within irrigation systems are an excellent way to customize your watering needs. It’s even possible to use more than one type of sprinkler head within one system. The key to choosing the best sprinkler heads is to understand the various types:

  • Rotary: These emit a spray of water in a circular motion; they work well for medium to large areas.
  • Pop-up: Hidden below ground, these will pop-up when activated and in use. This type of sprinkler head can work in any size area and do well in garden zones.
  • Fixed Spray: These produce a constant fan-shaped spray; use these for small areas, shrubs, or ground cover plants.
  • Gear-Driven: Typically, these heads have pattern options and run quietly and smoothly; they are best suited for medium to large areas.
  • Multiple Stream: This will produce thin, rotating streams; try this type on uneven ground, medium-sized areas, and ground cover.
  • Shrub: These are designed specifically for mounting above the foliage; they offer flexibility with spray patterns and work well over shrubs, gardens, and ground cover.

You’ll find that some sprinkler heads offer convenient features that allow you to customize your watering system further. Look for these features when shopping for the best sprinkler heads:

  • Wiper Seal: Preventing leaks and ensuring proper retraction for pop-up sprinkler heads is the function of this feature.
  • Spring Retraction: If you want to be sure your pop-up sprinklers automatically return to the ground once they complete a cycle, look for this.
  • Special Patterns: For small areas, ground cover, and soils that are slow to absorb, special patterns coupled with a micro spray head will be the best option.

You really can’t do much around the yard without a good garden hose. Yet, trying to drag around, or attempting to coil and put away a standard hose is a cumbersome task. Get the best expandable hose to solve your problems.

The expandable hose expands when in use to reach all corners of your yard or garden and then contracts for easy storage when you don’t need it.

There have been a lot of different expandable hoses to hit the market in recent years, and knowing which one is the best expandable hose for your outdoor needs is difficult. That is why we’ve put together this useful guide to help you find just the right expandable hose to help you with your outdoor chores.

We are a professional reader-supported review site. You get our best product recommendations and we can receive small commissions from our affiliates at no cost to you. Win-Win!!

How Expandable Hoses Work

The reason that expandable hoses retract and expand so well is the way they are designed. Each hose has two distinct layers. The outer layer is a woven expandable fabric that protects the inner rubber or latex hose which expands in response to water pressure. When the water is turned on, the pressure causes the inner layer to expand. It expands on the inside until it is stopped by the outer fabric layer. Once fully expanded it is a long and more functional hose.

The result is a garden hose that is virtually kink proof. And since the inner rubber layer has self-sealing properties, most expandable hoses are also resistant to leaks, holes, and tears.

Hoses Under Pressure

While water pressure causes these hoses to expand and lengthen, there’s only so much pressure they can handle. The inner rubber layer of most expandable hoses isn’t designed to withstand water pressures above 200 psi.

The good news is that the water pressure of the average suburban household is usually less than 80 psi. So keep this in mind. Yes, this is even when the spigot is open full throttle. So you don’t really have to worry about exploding hoses. However, if you have water pressure that is extremely low, it’s going to cost you some hose length since the pressure will not be sufficient to fully expand the hose material.

Not All Hoses Are Created Equal

While the differences between expandable hoses tend to be rather small, you will want to pay particular attention to the construction of the couplings. This is the point at which cheap hoses fail. A good durable coupling, usually made of brass or some other metal material, will outlast and outperform a cheaper plastic coupling every time.

The popularity of expandable hoses is growing. Although, I still have not seen an expandable soaker hose. Hum…

One of the key steps in maintaining a healthy and beautiful lawn is proper watering. Your goal should be to water-smart, not hard. To avoid back-breaking work, reap the benefits of buying the best lawn sprinkler.

You’ll want to select the best lawn sprinkler for your needs, and that will depend on several factors such as the size and shape of your lawn, soil conditions, and type of grass and plants. Fortunately, there are many style options available.

To help you in your quest for the best water sprinkler, we have carefully researched and put together this comprehensive buying guide. All you need to know can be found here.

Buying Information

Lawn sprinklers aren’t a “one size fits all” product. As mentioned previously, you’ll want to take into consideration your needs before purchase, but you also want to educate yourself on the various types of sprinklers. Let’s take a look at the most common styles:

  • Oscillating. These have a back and forth movement that creates a waterfall spray pattern; they provide coverage that is even and work well with medium to large areas.
  • Fixed. Stationary sprinklers that create a single spray over a specific area; usually the most budget-friendly and work well in small areas.
  • Traveling. These sprinklers will travel as far as your hose will reach; varying spray patterns are usually an option, and they work nicely for large areas or on uneven yards.
  • Impact. This type of sprinkler has a circular rotation and produces a single water jet. It is wind-resistant and is nicely suited for large yards.
  • In-Ground. A sprinkler system installed into the ground. This option usually has features such as a timer and zone programming and will work in any size area.
  • Rotating. With two or more arms, these sprinklers spin and emit water in a circular motion. Best suited for medium size areas.

Having familiarized yourself with the more common styles, let’s discuss features. Some lawn sprinklers are quite basic, however; you can find sprinklers that offer convenient features, such as:

  • Automatic Shut-Off. Look for this feature if you are purchasing a traveling sprinkler. This is a water-saving mechanism that will shut off the sprinkler once it has completed a pattern or cycle.
  • Flow Timer. This is a water-saving element giving you control over the amount of water used during a cycle. It monitors the amount of water used and stops at the set amount
  • Automatic Timer. This feature allows you to set a specific time for your sprinkler to turn on and off; this is especially helpful if you live in an area with watering restrictions.

Sample of Lawn Sprinkler Types

Orbit Traveling Sprinkler

The Orbit Traveling Sprinkler has replaced the good old Nelson Rain Train as the best traveling sprinkler. Seems it has equal quality at a better price making many people happy.

Water propels it from your hose. With three speeds, you’re able to control the amount of water used on your yard. It can travel up to 200 feet and can cover up to 13,500 square feet.

This sprinkler has a durable cast-iron body and chip-resistant paint. The spray arms are made of aluminum and are adjustable providing a spray range from 15 to 55 feet in diameter. The speed settings are: fast, slow, and neutral (medium) to control the watering level by crawling at different speeds. All settings are self-propelled.

As with any product, there are a couple of drawbacks to consider. The cast-iron body makes this sprinkler a bit heavy and cumbersome. Also, it will take some work to get the spray set to the desired area. Expect a bit of trial and error initially.

Overall, this is an outstanding option for a large and irregular (uneven) lawn. It is priced reasonably and the automatic shut-off feature is quite convenient. It also stands up well to the elements so if left outside, you can expect it to stay in good shape. And there is something just satisfying about watching it crawl across your lawn!

Melnor MiniMax Oscillating Sprinkler

The Melnor 65003 is a metal sprinkler that can cover up to 4000 square feet. The width control is an easy one-touch design; the base is made of sturdy aluminum, it is clog-resistant and features a motor that is turbo driven.

One of the most important features of this sprinkler is its water pressure adjustment: this allows the control of the output of water and the water height. This sprinkler requires a bit of time to learn how to use it properly. The water pressure adjustment is a bit tricky to get set up just right for your lawn.

The sprinkler is affordable and is solidly built. The metal base has a protective coating to prevent erosion, oscillates well, and because it’s easy to relocate, you’ll have no trouble using this on your lawn or in a garden. It’s a great option for those who prefer a relatively basic lawn sprinkler.

Raigro 360 Degree Pulsating Sprinkler

The Raigro 360 Degree Pulsating Lawn and Garden Sprinkler has an all-metal head and waters a circle up to 85 feet in diameter. Let’s see that is Pi*R² = over 22,000 square feet of coverage. If you have enough water pressure, this guy will deliver the water.

You don’t need to think of this as just being for large yards though. You can screw in the diffuser pin that creates more diversified stream of water.

The weighted base gives the sprinkler stability and control. The metal head is rust-proof and built to last. Watching these things water makes me wonder if my Tic-Toc dancing daughter even knows that these pulsating lawn sprinklers created the dance craze.

We selected this specific sprinkler for our best of reviews because not only is it outstanding on its features alone, but also very reasonably priced. This makes it a great value. ✔ Yes! I want it!
